UPSC Exam Pattern 2014 Details of Paper Pattern and Qualifying Criteria

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the civil services exam every for short listing candidates in different cadres of administrative services. The exam is held in three stages namely: Preliminary Exam, Main Exam and Interview/ Personality Test respectively. The candidates should qualify in all the papers of the exam to finally get selected in the exam.

The Preliminary Exam for the Union Public Service Commission is now known as the CSAT Exam. The candidates who are preparing for the civil services exam can go through the detailed format of question paper from the information as given below.

Exam Pattern:

There will be three papers in the Union Public Services Civil Services Examination namely:

1. Preliminary Examination

2. Main Examination and

3. Interview/ Personality Test

Paper Pattern for Preliminary Examination:

The Preliminary Examination consists of objective type multiple choice questions on the following:

General Studies (200 Marks)

Total Marks Allotted: 400 Marks

Only those candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Exam will be called for the MAIN Exam scheduled to be held subsequently after the Preliminary Exam. The questions asked in the Preliminary Exam will consist of questions in both the languages- English as well as Hindi respectively.

Paper Pattern for Mains Examination:

The Mains Exam shall be having a total of nine papers for the candidates to qualify having conventional essay type questions on the following:

Paper I: Any one language as selected by the applicant from the 18 available languages: 300 Marks

Paper II: English (Qualifying Paper): 300 Marks

Paper III: Essay: 200 Marks

Paper IV & V: General Studies: 300 + 300 =600 Marks

Paper VI, VII, VIII & IX: Any two subject from the prescribed optional subjects (300 Marks each): 1200 Marks

Total Marks Allotted: 2000 Marks

Interview/ Personality Test:

The candidates appearing for the Interview/ Personality Test should have qualified in the Preliminary as well as Mains Examination with the required cut off marks as needed for this purpose.

Marks Allotted to Interview: 300

Total Marks of Mains & Interview: 2300
